2012 Recap!

Here is my recap of 2012.  Feel free click any links that excite you, heck if you have 12 days go ahead and click them all but I won't feel bad if you don't!
McKenna and I went on our first girls trip which you can read about HERE, I will warn you that it is a very loooong post but kind of entertaining.

I made a job change that seemed like a good idea but it wasn't!

Jake, Jorge, Holly and I went to New York and Boston so that Holly and I could run the Boston Marathon, that was definitely memorable.

Did the Utah Valley Half Marathon while over trained, that was really somethin'!

I ran my own version of an Ultra Ragnar at the Wasatch Back Ragnar.  I actually quite enjoyed that, crazy huh?!?  I would love to do an Ultra Ragnar again!!!
I ran the American Fork Canyon Half Marathon which I loved with all my heart, this was the only race that I actually raced.  I PR'd but didn't get the time I was hoping for...boo hoo!
Ran the Freedom Run 10K another PR but again I was disappointed with my time.  I'm starting to see a trend, maybe I should be happy with my PR's rather than compare myself to others who are much speedier than me.  There will always be someone faster you know!
I ran a 20 Mile Half Marathon which sounds odd and it was!

I started pacing races which is my favorite.  I paced the Top of Utah Half Marathon and loved every second of it!
Paced the Mt. Nebo Half Marathon and found one of my new favorite races!  If you want to PR this is the race for you.

Another PR race would have to be the Big Cottonwood Half Marathon.  That was an amazing race.  I totally forgot to post this fancy video they sent me.  They made videos for every runner which is just awesome!  Big Cottonwood Video!  You can try the link but I don't know if it will work or not :(

I ran my most favoritest race EVER!!!  No race will ever live up to the Nike Women's Marathon!  That family trip was amazing...SO FUN!
I quit the job that I thought I wanted!  It turns out that lazy people annoy the crap out of me, wow that was blunt wasn't it?!?  I got so sick of people complaining that their heart rates were high...DUH!  That's sort of the point.  Obviously working out is hard otherwise everyone would do it and there wouldn't be a huge obesity epidemic.  I know I am strange because I actually enjoy torturing myself but seriously if you were paying $35 an hour for a trainer wouldn't you put a little effort into doing what you are being told?  I had to hold my tongue so many times when people complained about my workouts being too hard.  Seriously, if they wanted hard I would give it to them, I was actually really nice to them :)

I quit as soon as I got back from our San Francisco trip and truth be told I wasn't working enough to make it worth it anyway.  Basically since I quit I have been caring for McKenna with her migraines or either one of my kids for different illnesses.  I truly do think that everything happens for a reason and I think that I needed to be home these past 2 1/2 months.  It was hard for me to accept that training wasn't for me.  Rather it was because I wasn't a good trainer, motivator or that I just didn't fit in where I was working or maybe all of the above.  I know that I needed to be here for my kids no matter how horrible I felt about myself being a jobless twit.  Where do I go from here?  Quite frankly I don't know.  I am working on getting certified as a cycling instructor but will that really be enough?  That is a good question.  I guess I am on a quest to find what I want to be doing.  Actually, I know what I want to do.  I want to get paid to workout and blog, is that too much to ask?  Not, if you ask me :)

Paced the Halloween Half Marathon, this one was tough for me, I don't think I was quite recovered from my marathon but still managed to finish in time!  I was shocked!
The last race I did was the Thankful 13 Half Marathon.  I loved the race but it was very hard for me!  It was a great way to kick off Thanksgiving!

That is 8 half marathons, 2 full marathons, a 10K and partridge in a pear tree!  I also ran 2 5K's with Kobe which was sooooo fun!  Jake and McKenna ran them too but Kobe and I ran together.  I really wish I would have done a blog post on those races.  If Kobe could run every race with me I would be pleased as punch!  I ran a grand total of 2405.59 miles (I don't know how I ended up with such an odd number, that will drive me crazy for eternity) and here are some other interesting facts that the DailyMile told me.
2,516 Total Miles (I thought this was what I ran, I was so sad when I found out that it included my walks)
426.40 Total Time
48 Lbs Burned
329 Total Workouts
0.10 Around World
351.92 TVs Powered
132.42 Gas Saved
918.30 Donuts Burned
It looks like I can eat a few donuts if I so desire ;)

Overall I would say it was a year full of awesome races, fun trips, lots of trials and even more self doubt.  Maybe my new year's resolution should be to believe in myself a little more.

If you made it through that post you should get a medal!

New York City Day 1!!

I am just finding the "draft" of a post that was written in April and it is now December and of course I have forgotten all of the fun details of the rest of the trip.  Hopefully it will come back to me but for now I guess this is all you get!

This trip was one that I will NEVER forget..but just in case I do, I want to do a post about it, or 3!

Wednesday morning Holly and I woke up at 4:10 a.m. to go get our workout done before we had to get packing, cleaning and all of that fun stuff.  We dropped our kids off at Mama Jex's at about 7 p.m. so we could head up to SLC for our RED EYE flight :/  We boarded the plane at about 11:30 p.m. and arrived at JFK airport at 5:30 a.m.  Needless to say none of us got any sleep, heaven knows we tried but the weather was bad and the flight was HORRIBLE!!  I was certain that we were going to die and all I could think of was how selfish I was to leave my kids to run a marathon and that I would never see them again.  I know you think I am exaggerating but it was honestly the scariest flight I've ever been on.

We grabbed a cab and had him take us into Manhattan...where we took a bus...to a subway... to an air tram...to a shuttle and viola 3 hours later we got to our hotel :)

All I could think was what on earth have we gotten ourselves into.  We got showered up, took about a 15 minute nap and we were off!  So that's 15 minutes of sleep between Wednesday and Thursday, just for anyone keeping track.  We got to Manhattan and wandered all over the town, we probably walked somewhere between 8-15 miles.  We decided that if we took the subways we would miss too much so we walked and walked and walked and walked.  We saw Times Square, Trump Tower and lots of other stuff making our way to Central Park.  We then walked back to where we started and headed back to our hotel in Newark.

This was in Trump Tower!
Angry Bird comin' at ya!
We had some fun in FAO Schwartz

Friday morning Holly and I woke up and headed down to the hotel gym for a lovely walk on an incline and some core work.  We walked 4 miles and laughed hysterically at Ridiculousness on MTV...so FUNNY!!!!  We got ready for the day and headed out for another adventurous day in New York.  We started near Times Square again and headed towards the Statue of Liberty.  We saw lots of fancy cars, we had to take pictures for Kobe who is obsessed with cars.
Do you like my new ride?  I wish!!

From this point on I am just trying to remember what went down 8 months later so it's a little fuzzy!
We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge so we could eat at Ghrimaldi's.  Ghrimaldi's was the best pizza EVER!
Holly had an adventure buying a bag from a suspicious fella' in the alley ;)
We made our way up by Central Park, we walked all the live long day.
We tracked ourselves on this fine day and we walked over 20 miles not including the treadmill fun that Holly and I had.
The next day we rented a car and drove to Boston, why didn't anyone tell us it was so far away ;)  We went straight to the race expo and walked around for a bit.
We went to a Red Sox game which was really fun even though we didn't really have seats, we had standing room.  It was amazing to see Fenway Park!

Race day was pretty much race, walk around Boston with our good buddy Cameron and that's about all I remember!
Tuesday we walked around Boston for a little bit and then had to drive back to New York to catch our flight home.  We walked up to our gate to see Cameron sitting there along with a whole bunch of other Boston runners.  The flight home was the most miserable thing I've ever experienced.  My legs hurt soooo bad, if you've run a marathon before you can imagine the pain of sitting on a plane the day after a marathon for 6 hours.  I wanted to jump out the window, seriously!!!
This was truly a trip of a life time.  I had so much fun :)

Last Chance!

I have a couple of people who have yet to claim their prize in my 12 days of Christmas.  I am giving the winner of the 1st day of Christmas until tomorrow (December 29th) at noon to contact me otherwise your prize will be gone.  Whitney@FrenchFryRunner please contact me asap!!

Monica, the winner of the Stocking full of GU has until Monday (December 31st) to contact me otherwise her prize will be gone.

Consider this your last chance ladies :)

I want to add one little thing into this post that I feel is very important.  Cross training!!  I have heard many people question the importance of cross training.  Of course we all love running...DUH who doesn't ;)  The problem with only running is that you will create muscle imbalances.  Pretty much EVERY injury is the result of a muscle imbalance.  When you do the same movement over and over you create overactive muscles and under active muscles.  I don't want to get to technical here because I know people will stop reading because they are bored out of their minds.  Google muscle imbalances in running and you will get some good information.  Just rememeber that working muscles that you DON'T use when running is good :)

If you are running and not strength training or doing some other form of cardio on a daily basis you are asking for an injury.  When strength training you don't only work your quadriceps right??  No, you work your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calfs.  You have to work ALL of your muscles not just your favorite.

How many times have you seen a meat head at the gym whose shoulders are totally rounded forward?  I've seen it a lot and do you know what it means?  It means that said meat head loves to work his chest but doesn't work his back.  Not only can muscle imbalances lead to injury but serious posture problems.  I see so many guys who go to the gym and work their chest every single day, not good!!  And I know we've all seen the guys who have HUGE upper bodies but bird legs, aren't they attractive?!?

Cross training is also good because your body needs a break from running sometimes but maybe you still want to get your sweat on.  I love a good spin class.  Not only can I get an awesome workout but I am working different muscles which is a good thing!  Road or mountain biking is good fun too!

This picture was taken at my last road race.  It was the Skinny Tire Event in Moab, I believe it was 72 miles.  It was a great time even though I had pneumonia, which I'm pretty sure I have again right this very minute.
This was my first road race which I think was 50ish miles???  It was a super good time.

See Niccole and I even got to pose with the big bad wolf, that equals FUN!!
I haven't rode my road bike in quite sometime because I read a book (The Long Run) and I have been horrified of biking ever since.  I also HATE dogs that chase bikes.  People need to learn how to put their doggies on leashes.

I have promised myself that I would do an Ironman one day, a full Ironman at that.  So it seems that I need to hop back on my bike and jump in the pool.  That was a little tangent but hopefully you are getting my point.

Talk to any physical therapist and they will tell you the importance of cross training...it's science people!

Do you cross train and if so what do you do?

I love doing spin and one day I will get back on my bike and learn to swim :)

Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve, yay!!  I went to the gym today and soon after I started working out I realized that I felt like crap.  I had been fighting a cold all week and apparently I lost :(  I was planning to run after my leg workout but seems how I couldn't breathe I decided to do spin.  It was interesting to say the least and I will leave it at that because my mama always told me if I couldn't say something nice not to say anything at all!
Last night we went to see the beautiful lights at the River Woods.  Kobe feel in love with a ginormous nut cracker ;)

Anyways on with the winners of the wonderful necklace!  The first winner is...
I like the RUN and 13.1 charms :)

12th Day of Christmas!!

Today (Saturday) started off the very best way possible.  Holly and I met up with a big group for "Twas the Run Before Christmas."  Rachelle put together this awesome event, thank you Rachelle!!  Everyone there was super fast so we let them go on their way.  We were dressed up in silly Elf hats and Santa socks, we looked very festive!
Aren't those hats dashing?  They had bells on them so we jingled while we jangled but I ran my little bell right off dang it!
I don't know many of the people below but I can tell you that they are FAST!!

We headed up the canyon with the group but the wind was no fun so we decided to turn around and run about the city.  Best decision EVER!  Every car that we ran in front of at stop lights were so pleased to see 2 goofy little elves running about the town.  We would wave and say Merry Christmas, with a few ho ho ho's thrown in every once in a while.  Jake got Christmas music on 2 ipod's for us so we ran and sang.  We spread Christmas cheer by singing loud for all to hear.  We had people honking at us, waving at us and guess who passed us honking like crazy to get our attention?  The jolliest elf around, old St. Nick himself.  This was seriously the most fun I have ever had running.  I wanted to run all day unfortunately my legs didn't.  We did 15 glorious, fun filled miles!  Best day ever!

Before I get into today's giveaway I just want to thank all of the business' who helped me.  I really wanted to giveaway my favorite things and they were more than willing to help. :)

On the 12th day of Christmas Lil' Mama gave to me...an entry into the Utah Valley Half Marathon!  This race will be held on June 8, 2013.  I ran this race this past year and loved it, you can read my race recap HERE!  I hope to do this race again next year, I loved it!

To go along with your wonderful half marathon you will also get....

11th Day of Christmas!

Wow, today (today is Friday to me but Saturday to you ;) has been quite emotional!  First, I pulled up to McKenna's school to drop her off and there were 2 cop cars parked in front.  I was not about to send her in there without seeing what was going on.  I told her to stay in the car and that I would be right back.  She freaked out and said, "No, then you will die and I will never to go school again and I will never be happy at Christmas time!"  She was getting teary which just broke my heart.  We decided to circle the building, I knew if there were something too serious going on that there would be more than 2 cops there.  After circling the building I locked my kids in the car and ran inside to see what was going on.  I saw 3 policeman standing there shootin' the breeze.  I asked if the school was safe and a cop told me it was so I sent Kenna in and went home.

As I was driving home the events of last week hit me hard.  I have been trying to avoid the news because I hate how horrible the world is that we live in and I didn't want to be scared to send my kids to school.  I got very emotional and that started my downward spiral.  I thought of all those parents who sent their sweet babies off to school and will never see them again, at least in this life.  After school, Kenna told me that there had been a threat at a school in Mapleton which is 2 minutes away and that 6 kids were arrested.  That made me so angry.  Why didn't the cop tell me what was really going on?  I would have never left my baby girl there had I known that the stupidity is spreading to our little community!

Later in the day my dear friend Holly brought me a huge bag of goods.  She did way too much and included a note that made me cry.  She said she wished she could give me a new gas range but couldn't quite swing that.  She gave me some very thoughtful gifts and I am so thankful to have such a caring friend.

THEN, I got a text from my friend Dawn offering to let us use her toaster oven until we can get a new stove.  I don't know why but I just started bawling all over the place.  Jake thought I had lost my darn mind.  It was getting time to pick our kids up from gymnastics so I tried desperately to compose myself.  Just when I had calmed myself down "Away in a Manger" came on the radio.  I was fighting with all my might not to cry, do you think it worked?? NO!!  Jake has been gone on a business trip all week and apparently didn't know what he had gotten himself into spending time with me.

We got home to find a gift from one of my very best friends, Niccole, who I rarely see anymore.  I miss her so very much and reading her note made me emotional again.  Mostly because we used to see each other everyday and now we only see each other in passing at the gym.

I feel a bit like Scrooge at the end of the movie!  I have seen so much kindness shown to me today that I really didn't deserve.  I am grateful for all that I have been blessed with, especially a great family and good friends!  I don't know if any of this makes any sense and I know no body really cares but I wanted to get some feelings out there.  Enough is enough already!  There is a giveaway today and it is AWESOME, valued at over $100!

On the 11th day of Christmas Lil' Mama gave to me...an entry into the Top of Utah Marathon!!!!!  So awesome right?!?  The race will be held in Logan, Utah on September 21, 2013.  I am here to tell you that this is an amazing race, one of my very favorites!!!  You can read all about my Top of Utah full marathon experience HERE and my TOU half marathon experience HERE!  Both the full and the half are beyond amazing!
There I am feeling AMAZING during the last 10 miles of the Top of Utah Marathon.  It was a really good day, rain, hail and all!  I truly LOVE this race!  I am doing the Ogden Marathon in May but I am also doing the Top of Utah Marathon.  I can't wait!

This is Holly and I after we paced the Top of Utah 1/2 Marathon this year!

Not only will you get an entry into the marathon but you will also get...
That's right!  Scott at Scott James Jewelry was beyond generous and sent many necklaces so the lucky winner of the marathon will also get a cute necklace!!!

10th Day of Christmas!

Wow, can you believe it's already the 10th day?  Hallelujah, this blogging every darn day is hard work.  I might have to retire after this 12 day adventure!  Let's get on with it shall we?

On the 10th day of Christmas Lil' Mama gave to me...a necklace from Scott James Jewelry!  Actually I will be giving away 2 today so your chances just increased!  Here is the necklace you will get.

Oh, I love it!
Now instead of wearing your race medals around town you can just add charms for each race that you do.  I don't know about you but I don't like to wear my medal any longer than 3 days ;)

I absolutely LOVE my necklace.  I may not have realized just how much I loved my necklace until I thought I had lost it forever.  I will admit that since receiving my Tiffany necklace from the Nike Women's Marathon I have not worn my beloved Scott James necklace.  I had worn it everyday for well over a year so when I got a shiny new necklace I was excited.  I needed to shine up my SJ necklace so it was just easier to wear the new one.  My friends, after the day I have had I promise from this day forward to rotate the 2 necklaces equally!!!  I loved the San Francisco race so much that I really don't think any race will ever live up to it.  I didn't have the best race but having never been to San Francisco made it amazing!  I wanted to remember that race from that day forward so wearing the necklace each and every day reminded me of the race and of the wonderful family trip we were able to take.

This morning as I went to get my SJ necklace I FREAKED out to see that it wasn't in it's spot.  I was fighting the tears with every ounce of my being, okay I cried :*(  I realized that that necklace meant more to me than anything.  I have charms from different races.  Races that came with many, many memories.  With my necklace gone I felt lost and helpless.  I almost called up Scott himself seems how we are practically BFF's now ;)  I hoped that he would have mercy on my soul and tell me to keep one of the necklaces he had sent for the giveaway.
Here is my necklace way back when I first got it.

I racked my brain trying to figure out what had happened to my beloved necklace!  I am quite OCD, on certain things, and I always put my jewelry in the same place...ALWAYS!  I thought of a place to look while driving home from Costco, just to come home and be disappointed not to find it.  I nearly cried AGAIN!  I finally decided to look in a piece of our luggage we had taken to San Fran.  I was sure I had seen it since then but figured it was worth a shot.  And lo an behold I found it!!  I was so happy that I shouted with joy and hugged my little necklace with all my might.  I shined it all up and it is beautiful again :) SEE.

Each charm has special meaning to me.  I got the chain, 26.2, run and stone at the Utah Valley Marathon Expo in 2011.  You can read all about the race HERE!
A week later I added the Ragnar symbol, race recap HERE.  I bought the charm before my first leg of Ragnar and will wear it as a badge of honor for surviving that miserable race ;)
Holly gave me the ultra charm for my birthday right after my "Ultra Ragnar" you can read about that HERE.
While at Ragnar Holly and I talked to Scott about getting a Boston charm, for THIS race!
See all the charms have precious memories attached to them, I treasure my necklace.  I also have cute little runner girl earrings that Holly gave me.  Next on my list is one of their super cute rings, check them out on their website.

So like I said I have 2 necklaces to give away, so get busy.  You know the drill right?!?

Before I recap the giveaways I have a dumb Steph moment to share.  I just went to pick my kids up from gym and I walked past a fellow, he said "what's up?"  To which I said "good!"  Ha ha ha, what a dorkus!

9th Day of Christmas!

Today is a special giveaway, it's a giveaway from the heart :)  I found 11 companies to participate in my 12 days of Christmas but had to come up with one all on my own.  Just know that the last 3 days are pretty freaking awesome!!

On the 9th day of Christmas Lil' Mama gave to me...a stocking full of GUUUU!  To fuel all of your wonderfully long runs a stocking full of GU's!  I hope you feel special because this stocking was supposed to be for little Mercedes Gracie, our 3rd child who never made it here!  Please don't feel sad about it because we decided after 2 kids that we had had just about enough ;) just kidding!  I do so love the little children but 2 seemed like a good number for our family.  I bought 5 stockings because I wanted them all to match and knew if I waited they would be gone.  I have held onto little Mercedes (if it was a girl anyway and if it was a boy...I guess he would have a girl name ;) stocking long enough.  It's time to let it go!  But do know that if by some freak of nature I end up with child I will be asking for it back...not really!

There it is hanging with the others, well sort of!
It is filled with Honey Stingers, GU's, Roctane, Accel Gel and one lonely Clif Shot.
That's a lot of stinkin' GU!
And for the rest of you...
No, you do not get an eviction notice, you get a KYT workout!!  I have kept my awesomely hard workouts to myself long enough.  I was going to do a vlog but seems how I don't have a fancy shmancy digital camcorder I cannot!  Plus, I didn't really want to, if you read yesterday's post you would already know that :)  I do KYT workouts every Wednesday and this is the one I did yesterday.  You MUST do it as fast as you possibly can, I think it usually takes me 45-ish minutes.  Remember to use good form and get a full range of motion.

For this workout you go through it 3 times.  So when you see 25/20/15 that means that the first set you do 25, 2nd set 20, 3rd set 15.  Get it?  Good!  The other exercises you will use heavy enough weight that you can only do 10-12, unless otherwise stated.  Are you with me here?

25/20/15 Burpees
10-12 Squats on smith machine or with really heavy dumbbells
30/25/20 Push-ups
10-12 Bent over triceps kickbacks w/ bands
18/15/12 Lunge jumps with arms overhead
10-12 Pull-ups, jump if needed.
25/20/15 Burpees
10-12 Deadlifts
30/25/20 Push-ups
10-12 W raises (shoulder press w/ palms in, push weight overhead sending arms out so you look like a W)
18/15/12 Lunge jumps with arms overhead
10-12 Static bicep curls (hold one arm at 90 degrees while curling other arm all the way up and down, switch sides after 6 and repeat, 12 on each side)
25/20/15 Burpees
10-12 Push press w/ barbell
30/25/20 Push-ups
20 V-up crunches
18/15/12 Lunge jumps

If you don't know what an exercise is then try googling it, I really don't want to have to do a vlog!
I hope you will all give it a whirl, it is sure to kick your trash...thus the name!

8th Day of Christmas!

Before I start I need to make sure everyone understands that leaving a comment on my Facebook post does not enter you into the drawing.  You have to leave the comment on this blog!!!  And if you like the company on Facebook and follow them on Twitter you have to tell me in a comment below, otherwise I have no way of knowing.  Capiche?
On the 8th day of Christmas Lil' Mama gave to me...a Twete Bird headband!  These headbands are amazing, they really don't slip no matter what you are doing.  You can run, cycle, lift weights, do gymnastics, shovel snow (we have lots of that at my house right now) and even go prance about the town.  I pretty much live in my headbands.
See Lil' Mama run...with Smeagol!
See Lil' Mama and Holly model ;) We are wearing the headbands, look close!
See Lil' Mama strangle Koko, it was all in fun don't worry!
Even Mrs. Claus wears Twete Bird headbands, cool!
Holly came over and guess what she was wearing, isn't it nice?!?

I especially love these headbands because they are adjustable which is a pretty big deal when you have a pea-sized noggin!  I don't look like it but I have an extremely small head, I have to buy hats in the kids section for Pete's sake...who the heck is Pete anyway?
I have really short hair which can be unruly at times, all the time, so it is of the utmost importance to tame the beast with a headband.  I have a funny story for you.  When I worked at 26.2 Running Co. my boss made me do a video product review of said headbands.  Well, I am here to tell you that I do not like being on camera, hate it!  My boss was well aware of this, I think I made it perfectly clear that I wasn't happy about the video idea.  So being the brat that I am I purposefully made it HORRIBLE!  I wouldn't look at the camera, I just gazed about the store.  I could see him motioning for me to look at the camera and I ignored him...hee hee hee!  I knew if I made it really bad that there would be no way he would do anything with it, I'm smarter!!
You get the headband of your choice so go to their website and peruse!
